The Wealth of a Merchant

Ceritasakti.com - A long time ago, during the time of Prophet Musa AS, lived a merchant named Qarun.

Allah SWT had blessed Qarun with an unimaginable amount of wealth and treasure. His wooden chests were overflowing with shining gold, silver, and precious jewels. In fact, the keys to his treasure chests were so incredibly heavy that it took a group of strong men just to carry them!

However, instead of being thankful for this beautiful blessing, Qarun became incredibly proud and arrogant.

He frequently scolded the poor, ignored the orphans, and completely refused to give Sadaqah (charity) for the sake of Allah SWT.

The Gentle Advice

Seeing his extreme arrogance, a group of wise and pious men decided to visit Qarun to offer him guidance.

"O our brother, Qarun," the pious men spoke gently. "Do not be so proud and arrogant with your abundant wealth. Allah does not love those who are arrogant and ungrateful for His blessings."

But Qarun simply rolled his eyes and refused to listen to their beautiful advice.

"Listen to me!" Qarun shouted proudly. "I absolutely do not need your advice! I only have all this treasure because of my own brilliant mind and my own hard work. It belongs to me!"

The Rejection of Charity

The wise men shook their heads sadly, trying one more time to soften his heart.

"O Qarun, some of what you say about hard work is true," they replied. "But you would be so much more fortunate if you simply showed gratitude to Allah, rather than denying His immense blessings."

Qarun crossed his arms and glared at them. "What is it that you people actually want from my wealth?"

"We only want you to spend a small part of your wealth in the way of Allah," the pious men answered peacefully. "Feed the orphans, give Sadaqah to the poor, and pay your Zakat. This will purify your wealth and protect your heart from the terrible whispers of arrogance."

Instead of softening, Qarun became furious.

"You just want to steal my hard-earned gold!" Qarun yelled angrily. "Why should I care about spending my wealth on lazy people? Why should I feed the orphans when I already have my own family to feed? Leave me alone!"

The Earth Swallows the Pride

The pious men turned to leave, leaving Qarun with one final, profound warning.

"O Qarun, Allah is All-Seeing of everything you do," they warned. "Woe to those who refuse to do good deeds. Your wealth is merely a temporary trust from Allah, and He can take it back whenever He wills."

Sadly, the glittering gold had made Qarun's heart as hard as stone. He ignored the fact that Allah had previously destroyed generations before him who were much stronger and had collected even more wealth.

As it is beautifully stated in the Holy Qur'an:
"...Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? And the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked." (QS. Al-Qashash [28]: 78)

Because of his extreme arrogance and absolute refusal to share his blessings, a terrifying event occurred.

By the command of Allah SWT, the earth suddenly split open. In a single moment, the earth completely swallowed Qarun, his grand home, and every single piece of his beloved treasure deep into the ground. It was a tragic consequence for a man who forgot the true source of his blessings.
