The Parched Forest
Ceritasakti.com - The brutal dry season had stretched on for far too long, transforming the once vibrant and lush tropical forest into a dusty, golden landscape. Deep inside these fading woods lived Kancil, an incredibly agile and clever little mouse deer.
He was highly famous among all the jungle animals for his sharp mind, quick reflexes, and endless tricks. However, a sharp mind could not stop a rumbling stomach.
Kancil walked slowly through the dry bushes, his throat parched and his tummy aching with intense hunger. He had searched for food all morning but found absolutely nothing except dried, crunchy leaves and empty branches.
"If I do not find something juicy to eat soon, I am going to faint right here on this dusty trail," Kancil complained to himself, wiping his tired forehead with his small hoof.
The Hidden Vegetable Garden
Suddenly, a cool, refreshing breeze carried a familiar and highly mouth-watering scent. Kancil instantly lifted his nose, sniffing the air carefully. He followed the sweet aroma until he reached the very edge of the forest.
His bright eyes widened in absolute delight. Right in front of him was a massive, beautiful vegetable garden belonging to a local human farmer.
The garden was beautifully maintained, with rich, dark soil and a highly advanced watering system that kept everything perfectly green. The best part? The field was completely overflowing with massive, perfectly ripe, and incredibly juicy green cucumbers.
"Oh, what a glorious paradise!" Kancil whispered excitedly, licking his dry lips. "The farmer has so many cucumbers. Surely, he will not mind if a small, hungry mouse deer takes just one or two to survive."
Kancil squeezed quietly through a small gap in the wooden fence. He picked a large cucumber and took a massive bite. The cool, sweet juice instantly quenched his terrible thirst.
He ate one, then another, and another, completely forgetting his promise to take only a few. Before he realized it, he had eaten a huge portion of the farmer's hard-earned harvest.
The Sticky Scarecrow
The next morning, the farmer walked into his garden and gasped in sheer horror. Half of his beautiful cucumbers were completely gone, replaced by tiny, split-hooved footprints scattered all across the muddy soil.
"A mouse deer has ruined my precious harvest!" the angry farmer shouted, shaking his fist in the air. "I must stop this little thief before he returns tonight and eats everything else."
The farmer was a very skilled and clever man. He spent the entire afternoon building a wooden scarecrow right in the middle of the field. However, this was no ordinary scarecrow.
The farmer coated the entire wooden figure with incredibly sticky sap gathered from a nearby jackfruit tree.
"Let us see you escape this, you greedy little thief," the farmer chuckled, hiding behind a large bush to wait for the night to fall.
The Midnight Confrontation
When the moon rose high in the sky, Kancil returned to the garden, completely expecting another easy and delicious feast. As he trotted confidently into the center of the field, he suddenly noticed a tall, dark figure standing perfectly still among the cucumber vines.
Kancil stopped in his tracks, his heart beating slightly faster. He puffed out his tiny chest, trying to look as brave and intimidating as possible.
"Hey, you! Who are you, and what are you doing in my favorite dining spot?" Kancil demanded loudly.
The figure did not answer. It just stood there in the quiet night breeze.
"Are you ignoring me?" Kancil shouted, feeling highly insulted. "I am the great and powerful Kancil! If you do not step aside right now, I will punch you!"
The scarecrow remained completely silent. Furious at the disrespect, Kancil leaped forward and punched the wooden figure with his right front leg.
Smack! His hoof hit the scarecrow, but he instantly realized something was terribly wrong. He tried to pull his leg back, but the thick, sticky jackfruit sap held it completely trapped.
"Let go of me! Or I will punch you with my other leg!" Kancil threatened wildly. He swung his left leg, and smack! Now both of his front legs were permanently glued to the scarecrow.
Kancil panicked. He kicked with his back legs, and eventually pushed his head against the wooden chest, getting completely tangled and stuck in the sticky trap.
The Greedy Guard Dog
"Got you!" the farmer cheered, stepping out of the bushes with a triumphant smile. He carefully peeled the sticky mouse deer off the scarecrow and carried him back to his wooden house.
The farmer placed Kancil inside a strong wooden cage on his front porch. "You will make a very fine dinner tomorrow," the farmer laughed, walking inside to sleep.
Kancil sat in the dark cage, his brilliant mind racing at top speed. He needed an escape plan, and he needed it fast.
Just then, the farmer's large, fierce guard dog walked up to the cage, wagging his tail mockingly. "Well, well, well. Look who is going to be the master's dinner," the dog barked.
Kancil smiled brightly, pretending to be absolutely thrilled. "Dinner? Oh, you poor, ignorant dog. You have it all wrong. The farmer is not going to eat me. He locked me in here to keep me safe because tomorrow, he is marrying me to his beautiful daughter!"
The Clever Escape
The dog stopped wagging his tail. His ears dropped in pure confusion. "What? Marrying his daughter? But I am his loyal guard dog! I have served him for years. If anyone gets to marry into the family and eat roasted meat every day, it should be me!"
"You are absolutely right," Kancil sighed sympathetically. "It is deeply unfair. I do not even want to marry her. Hey, how about we trade places? You open this cage, I will run away, and you can take my spot. Tomorrow, you will be the one marrying the farmer's daughter!"
The greedy dog's eyes sparkled with excitement. He quickly used his heavy paws to lift the wooden latch on the cage door.
The moment the door swung open, Kancil leaped out into the freedom of the night.
"Thank you, my friend! Enjoy your grand wedding!" Kancil laughed loudly, sprinting away into the dark forest as fast as his little legs could carry him.
The greedy dog sat happily inside the cage, completely unaware that he had just been outsmarted by the cleverest animal in the entire jungle.
The Moral Message of the Fable
If you are a parent searching for highly engaging bedtime stories for kids, or a student looking for a great short folklore for school assignments, the story of Kancil offers incredible entertainment and value.
The profound moral message of this fable teaches us two important lessons. First, stealing what does not belong to you, like Kancil stealing the cucumbers, will eventually lead you into a terrible trap. Second, just like the farmer's dog, letting greed and jealousy control your actions will only result in your own foolish downfall.
