Just as he was about to give up and head home, his fishing rod suddenly jerked violently. Toba pulled with all his might, struggling against a surprisingly strong force hidden beneath the water.
When he finally reeled his catch in, Toba gasped in absolute disbelief. Attached to his hook was a massive fish, but it was not an ordinary river fish.
The creature possessed scales that shimmered brightly like pure, solid gold. It was the most beautiful and majestic fish Toba had ever laid his eyes upon in his entire life.
A Secret Vow and a New Beginning
Toba carefully placed the golden fish into his woven basket and hurried home, planning to cook a delicious dinner. However, when he reached his kitchen, a blinding magical light suddenly filled the room.
Toba shielded his eyes in pure shock. When the light faded, the golden fish had vanished completely. In its place stood a breathtakingly beautiful woman dressed in elegant traditional silk.

The Birth of Samosir
Toba and the beautiful woman were soon married, and they lived a very happy and prosperous life together. Their happiness multiplied when they were blessed with a healthy baby boy, whom they named Samosir.
As years passed, Samosir grew into a strong and active young boy. However, he had a very peculiar habit. Samosir had a massive, insatiable appetite and was incredibly lazy when it came to doing chores.
He could eat enough food meant for three adult men in a single sitting. His mother always patiently cooked large meals for him, spoiling him with love, while Toba continued to work hard in the fields to support his growing family.
The Disastrous Lunch Delivery
One extremely hot and tiring day, Samosir's mother asked the boy to deliver a basket of freshly cooked lunch to his father in the fields. Samosir grumbled but eventually took the basket and began his walk.
Along the way, the delicious aroma of the roasted fish and warm rice tempted his massive appetite. Unable to control his hunger, Samosir sat under a shady tree and ate almost the entire meal, leaving only a few fish bones and a handful of rice.
Meanwhile, Toba was waiting under the scorching sun, his stomach growling furiously. When Samosir finally arrived late, Toba eagerly opened the basket, expecting a hearty meal.
His excitement instantly turned into blinding rage when he saw the empty plates. "Where is my food, Samosir? I have been working all day, and you bring me nothing but leftovers!" Toba shouted.
"I was hungry on the way here, Father, so I ate it," Samosir answered innocently without showing any regret.
The Broken Promise
Toba’s exhaustion and hunger completely clouded his judgment. In a fit of uncontrollable anger, he slapped the basket away and yelled the forbidden words he had sworn to keep secret.
"You ungrateful, greedy child! You truly are the son of a fish!" Toba roared, his voice echoing across the silent valley.
The moment those words left his mouth, a sudden, terrifying silence fell over the land. Samosir burst into tears and ran as fast as his legs could carry him all the way back to their wooden hut.
He cried to his mother, repeating the harsh words his father had shouted at him. The mother's face turned completely pale, and tears streamed down her beautiful face. She knew instantly that her husband had broken his sacred vow.
The Great Flood and Samosir Island
Heartbroken and devastated, the mother told Samosir to run to the highest hill in the valley and never look back. As soon as the boy reached the hilltop, the mother stepped out of the house.
Dark, menacing clouds instantly swallowed the bright sky. Lightning struck the ground violently, and a deafening roar of thunder shook the entire earth.
The mother slowly transformed back into a giant golden fish and vanished into the river. Suddenly, water burst forth from the ground with unimaginable force, flooding the entire valley in a matter of minutes.
Toba, who had realized his fatal mistake, tried to run back home, but it was too late. The massive flood swept him away, drowning the valley and creating a massive, deep lake.
The magnificent lake is now known to the world as Lake Toba. Meanwhile, the high hill where the boy stood safe from the flood remained above water, creating the beautiful landmass known today as Samosir Island.
