The Respected Priest of Daha
Ceritasakti.com - Many centuries ago, when the islands of Java and Bali were still connected by a single, solid bridge of land, there lived a highly respected Hindu priest named Sidi Mantra. He resided in the prosperous Kingdom of Daha.
Sidi Mantra was known throughout the land for his immense spiritual power, his unmatched wisdom, and his incredibly generous heart. Because of his dedicated service to the gods, he was blessed with massive wealth, owning vast fields of golden rice and heavy chests filled with precious jewels.
Sidi Mantra had a handsome, intelligent young son named Manik Angkeran.
As a father, Sidi Mantra loved his son deeply and gave him everything he could ever desire. However, having too much wealth at a young age slowly poisoned Manik Angkeran’s mind. Instead of studying ancient scriptures or learning how to manage the family's vast farmlands, the young man spent all his time in the dark alleys of the local markets.
The Curse of the Gambler
Manik Angkeran had developed a terrible, unbreakable addiction to gambling. He spent every single day betting on animal fights and playing dice with dangerous criminals.
At first, he only lost a few silver coins. But as his addiction grew, his bets became larger and far more reckless.
"I will double my bet today!" Manik Angkeran shouted confidently during a high-stakes game. "I am the son of Sidi Mantra. I cannot possibly lose!"
But he did lose. He lost constantly. Within a few short years, Manik Angkeran had secretly gambled away his entire personal inheritance. Desperate to keep playing, he began borrowing massive amounts of gold from ruthless moneylenders.
One evening, a violent group of debt collectors arrived at Sidi Mantra’s peaceful home.
"Your son owes us ten chests of pure gold, old priest," the leader of the thugs threatened, drawing a sharp blade. "If he does not pay us by tomorrow morning, we will burn this beautiful house to the ground and take his life."
The Dragon of Mount Agung
Sidi Mantra was completely heartbroken. He had already spent almost all of his own wealth paying off his son's previous mistakes. He had absolutely no gold left to save his son's life.
Desperate to protect Manik Angkeran, the old priest locked himself inside his sacred meditation room. He closed his eyes, burned sweet incense, and prayed to the high gods for a miracle.
After hours of deep meditation, a booming, divine voice echoed inside his mind.
"Sidi Mantra," the mysterious voice whispered. "Travel to the massive crater of Mount Agung in Bali. There resides the great guardian dragon, Naga Basuki. Ring your sacred priest's bell and recite your prayers. The dragon possesses enough treasure to save your family."
Without wasting a single second, Sidi Mantra packed his magical wooden staff and his sacred brass bell. He walked for many exhausting days, crossing the dense jungles until he finally reached the towering, smoky crater of Mount Agung.
The Shower of Golden Scales
Standing at the edge of the dangerous volcanic crater, Sidi Mantra sat on a flat stone, closed his eyes, and gently rang his sacred bell.
Tring... Ting... Tring... Ting...
The beautiful sound echoed deep into the dark earth. Suddenly, the ground began to tremble violently. A massive cloud of thick smoke erupted from the crater, and from the deep shadows emerged Naga Basuki.
The dragon was incredibly magnificent. His massive body was covered in shimmering, golden scales, and a giant, flawless diamond rested on the very tip of his long tail.
"Why have you awakened me, holy priest?" Naga Basuki asked, his deep voice shaking the stones.
Sidi Mantra bowed respectfully. "O Great Guardian, forgive my intrusion. My son has made terrible mistakes and faces certain death at the hands of violent men. I humbly ask for a small piece of your endless treasure to save his life."
Knowing that Sidi Mantra was a truly good and pure man, the great dragon smiled gently. Naga Basuki shook his massive body, and dozens of pure golden scales fell freely onto the ground, instantly transforming into heavy gold coins.
"Take this gold, Sidi Mantra," the dragon commanded. "Pay the debts, but you must teach your son to change his wicked ways. Greed will only lead to ultimate destruction."
The Betrayal of a Son
Sidi Mantra returned home and immediately paid off the ruthless moneylenders. He firmly warned Manik Angkeran that this was his absolute final chance.
For a few short weeks, Manik Angkeran stayed home and behaved perfectly. However, the urge to gamble slowly returned, burning fiercely in his chest. Soon, he was back in the dangerous markets, betting larger amounts than ever before. He quickly lost everything once again.
"Father will not help me this time," Manik Angkeran panicked, pacing around his bedroom. "But I know he got that gold from the dragon of Mount Agung. If an old man can get treasure, so can I!"
While his father was sleeping, Manik Angkeran quietly stole the sacred brass bell. He ran as fast as he could, traveling all the way to the dangerous crater of Mount Agung.
Standing exactly where his father had stood, the greedy young man rang the bell loudly.
The Price of Supreme Greed
The earth trembled once again, and the magnificent Naga Basuki rose from the thick smoke. The dragon immediately noticed that it was not the holy priest, but an arrogant young man holding the bell.
"I am the son of Sidi Mantra!" Manik Angkeran shouted, completely lacking any respect. "Give me your gold immediately, dragon! I have massive debts to pay!"
Naga Basuki narrowed his giant, glowing eyes. "I will help you because of your father's noble heart. But you must swear to stop gambling forever."
The dragon turned his massive body around to shake some golden scales from his back. As the dragon turned, Manik Angkeran saw the giant, sparkling diamond resting at the end of the dragon's tail.
Blinded by extreme greed, Manik Angkeran drew his sharp hunting sword. With one violent, desperate swing, he chopped off the very tip of the dragon's tail to steal the giant diamond.
The Fire of Justice
Naga Basuki roared in absolute agony and pure fury. The painful sound echoed across the entire island.
Manik Angkeran tried to run away with the diamond, but he was completely outmatched. The great dragon opened his massive jaws and unleashed a terrifying blast of magical, scorching fire. In a single second, the greedy young man was burned to a pile of grey ashes.
When Sidi Mantra woke up and realized his son and his bell were missing, he ran frantically to Mount Agung. When he arrived, he found the angry dragon and a small pile of ashes holding his sacred bell.
Sidi Mantra fell to his knees, weeping uncontrollably.
"He attacked me and tried to steal my diamond," Naga Basuki explained sternly. "His greed brought him to this tragic end."
"Please, Great Dragon," Sidi Mantra begged, tears streaming down his old face. "He was foolish and wicked, but he is my only child. I beg you to restore his life. I will do whatever you ask!"
Naga Basuki felt deep pity for the heartbroken father. "I will bring him back to life," the dragon said. "But you must use your magic to restore my tail first."
The Creation of the Bali Strait
Sidi Mantra quickly agreed. Using his powerful spiritual magic, he easily reattached the dragon's tail. True to his word, Naga Basuki breathed a gentle, glowing mist over the ashes, and Manik Angkeran gasped for air, completely restored to life.
Manik Angkeran immediately fell to his knees, sobbing and begging for forgiveness from both his father and the dragon.
"I forgive you, my son," Sidi Mantra said softly, wiping his tears. "But you can no longer live under my protection. You must stay here in this wild land and learn how to survive on your own. You must build your own character."
To ensure his son could never return to the dark gambling dens of Daha, Sidi Mantra dragged his magical wooden staff deeply across the solid earth.
A massive, terrifying earthquake shook the ground. The land violently split open, and the wild ocean water rushed in to fill the massive gap. The single landmass was permanently torn in half, separating the island of Java from the newly formed island of Bali.
The rushing water that separated the father and son became forever known as the Bali Strait.
