The Morning Prep
Ceritasakti.com - Kiki stood in the bright kitchen. She chopped a green carrot top off on the heavy wooden cutting board. She grated the orange carrots into a large glass bowl. The kitchen smelled strongly of cinnamon and warm butter.
She spent the entire morning baking. Kiki carefully packed a thick slice of fresh carrot cake into a square metal tin. She wanted to eat this cake on the long airplane ride.
Jun walked into the kitchen. He held his phone in his right hand. His face looked completely blank. He did not look at the cake.
"The airline just canceled all morning flights," Jun said. "We cannot go to Greenland today."
Kiki stopped wiping the kitchen counter. She looked at their heavy winter coats resting on the living room couch. They planned this trip for six months. They saved their money. They wanted to see the thick ice. They wanted to take pictures of the wild polar bears.
"Are you joking?" Kiki asked. "The weather today is perfectly clear. Look at the sun outside."
Jun shook his head. He threw his car keys on the kitchen table.
"A computer radar problem at the main airport," Jun explained. "No flights are going out of the city. The airline said we have to wait two days for a new flight. We are stuck here."
The Heavy Silence
They sat in silence for a long time. Jun looked at his winter boots. Kiki looked at the metal cake tin on the counter. The house felt incredibly quiet.
She baked that cake specifically for the cold trip. Kiki did not want to spend her Saturday sitting in the living room watching television. The disappointment felt heavy in her chest.
"No..no... we are not staying home," Kiki finally said. "Grab the keys, Jun"
Jun looked up from his boots. He liked her attitude. They did not need to ruin the whole weekend just because of a computer error. They grabbed their small day bags. They left the heavy winter coats on the couch and walked outside into the warm afternoon air.
The Highway Drive
Jun started the engine of his old car. The engine rumbled loudly. He backed out of the driveway and drove out of the quiet neighborhood. He rolled all the windows down. The warm wind blew through Kiki's hair.
Jun turned on the radio. Loud music filled the small car. He turned the dial to a local city station. The radio DJ talked excitedly about a large comic convention happening downtown. The city was officially celebrating Batman Day.
The station played a fast, heavy superhero theme song. Jun drummed his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the music. The fast rhythm made them feel a little bit better.
Then the music stopped. A news reporter came on the radio. The reporter announced the grand downtown opening for Oktoberfest 2026. The broadcast talked about giant warm pretzels, loud carnival games, and massive crowds gathering in the main city square.
Change of Plans
"Change of plans," Jun said. He turned the steering wheel sharply to the left. He drove away from the airport road and headed toward the busy city highway.
They did not get to see the ice in Greenland. They did not get to see any polar bears. But they drove straight into the historic city center.
The streets looked completely different today. Colorful festival flags hung across the tall brick buildings. Thousands of people walked around the streets wearing bright traditional clothes. The rich smell of roasted nuts and grilled sausages filled the air.
Jun drove very slowly through the massive crowd. He finally found an empty spot. He parked the car near a grassy hill just outside the main festival gates.
The Parking Lot Picnic
They did not buy tickets to go inside the festival right away. Jun climbed onto the flat trunk of his car. Kiki sat next to him. She opened the metal tin. She handed Jun a small plastic fork.
They ate the carrot cake right there in the parking lot.
The loud festival music played in the background. The afternoon sun felt warm on their faces. Kiki looked at the massive crowd laughing near the gates. She looked at Jun. He was smiling while eating the sweet cake.
Sometimes a canceled flight hurts. But sometimes, an empty Saturday afternoon gives you exactly the kind of weekend you actually need.
