The Two Opposite Sisters

Unfortunately, Bawang Putih’s biological mother passed away when she was still a little girl. Hoping to give his daughter a motherly figure, her father eventually married a widow who had a daughter named Bawang Merah, which means "Shallot."
At first, the stepmother and Bawang Merah treated Bawang Putih with love and care. However, their true colors were quickly revealed shortly after Bawang Putih’s loving father tragically fell ill and passed away.
Without her father around to protect her, Bawang Putih’s life turned into a daily nightmare. Her cruel stepmother and Bawang Merah treated her like a lowly servant in her own home.
Every single day, she was forced to wake up before dawn to clean the house, cook all the meals, and wash a mountain of dirty clothes in the river, while Bawang Merah did absolutely nothing but sleep and complain.
The Lost Red Scarf
Despite the endless abuse and harsh words, Bawang Putih never once complained. She remained patient, always smiling and singing gently while doing her heavy chores.
One sunny morning, Bawang Putih carried a heavy basket of dirty clothes to the nearby river. The water current was unusually strong that day due to the heavy rain from the previous night.
While she was busy washing, she did not realize that her stepmother’s favorite red scarf had slipped from the washing stone. The scarf was quickly swept away by the fast-moving river current.
When Bawang Putih finally noticed it, the red scarf was already floating far away. She panicked and tried to chase it down the riverbank, but the rushing water was simply too fast.
Knowing that her stepmother would punish her severely, Bawang Putih bravely decided to follow the river stream into the deep forest, hoping to find the lost piece of clothing.
The Wise Grandmother and the Small Pumpkin
Bawang Putih walked for hours until the sky slowly turned dark. Finally, she arrived at a small, humble wooden hut near the edge of the river.
An old, wrinkly grandmother stepped out of the hut and smiled warmly at the tired young girl. Bawang Putih politely bowed and asked if the grandmother had seen a red scarf floating by the river.
"I did find a beautiful red scarf this afternoon, my dear," the old woman said gently. "I will gladly return it to you, but you must help me clean my hut and cook my dinner for an entire week."
Without any hesitation, Bawang Putih agreed. For the next seven days, she worked diligently, cleaning the hut until it sparkled and cooking delicious, warm meals for the grandmother.
Impressed by the young girl’s genuine kindness and hard work, the grandmother finally returned the red scarf. Before Bawang Putih left, the old woman offered her a gift, presenting two pumpkins: one was massive, and the other was very small.
Because Bawang Putih was humble and did not want to carry a heavy burden on her long walk home, she politely chose the small pumpkin and thanked the grandmother sincerely.
A Golden Surprise
When Bawang Putih arrived home, her stepmother and Bawang Merah were furious because she had been gone for a week.
They yelled at her aggressively, snatched the red scarf, and angrily smashed the small pumpkin Bawang Putih was holding onto the kitchen floor.
However, instead of pumpkin seeds, the room was suddenly filled with a blinding, sparkling light. The small pumpkin was magically filled with pure gold, sparkling diamonds, and precious jewels!
The greedy stepmother and Bawang Merah immediately pushed Bawang Putih away and collected all the treasure for themselves.
The Greedy Sister's Journey
Blinded by extreme greed, the stepmother formulated a cunning plan. She ordered Bawang Merah to intentionally throw the red scarf into the river and follow the exact same steps Bawang Putih had taken.
Bawang Merah walked lazily down the riverbank, complaining about the heat and the mud, until she finally found the old grandmother's hut.
Just like before, the grandmother asked Bawang Merah to help her for a week. However, the lazy girl refused to do any chores. She slept all day, demanded the grandmother to cook for her, and spoke with extreme disrespect.
After a week of terrible behavior, Bawang Merah arrogantly demanded the red scarf and her reward. The grandmother calmly brought out the two pumpkins.
Driven by intense greed, Bawang Merah immediately snatched the massive pumpkin without even saying thank you, dreaming of the infinite wealth she was about to receive.
The Price of Greed
Bawang Merah ran home as fast as she could. She and her mother quickly locked all the doors and windows, wanting to keep all the massive treasure entirely for themselves.
With trembling hands and greedy smiles, they smashed the giant pumpkin open. But to their absolute horror, there was no gold inside.
Instead, hundreds of venomous snakes, deadly scorpions, and giant spiders crawled out of the broken pumpkin, hissing and attacking them furiously.
The stepmother and Bawang Merah screamed in terror, running out of the house in complete panic. They finally realized that their arrogance, laziness, and cruelty had brought them nothing but disaster.
They immediately fell to their knees, crying and begging Bawang Putih for forgiveness. Because Bawang Putih had a heart of pure gold, she forgave them both. From that day on, the stepmother and Bawang Merah completely changed their ways and lived peacefully together as a loving family.
The Moral of the Story
This timeless folklore teaches us that genuine kindness, patience, and humility will always bring unexpected blessings and true happiness in our lives. On the other hand, arrogance, laziness, and greed will only lead a person to ultimate destruction and regret.
