Summary:
In the misty, towering shadows of Mount Arjuna, a famous local legend warns that any group of three hikers will be cursed by the mountain. Completely ignoring the warnings, three college freshmen—the overly confident Rido, the highly anxious Bima, and the sharply sarcastic Ajeng—decide to conquer the peak over the weekend. What begins as a fun hiking trip quickly turns into a series of terrifying, yet incredibly hilarious misunderstandings. From mysterious footsteps in the dark to a creepy figure on the summit, the trio believes they are being hunted by a phantom. However, a midnight scare back at their college dorm reveals the absolutely hilarious truth behind the mountain's "curse." It is a brilliant, engaging tale about conquering teenage anxiety, the power of friendship, and why you should never trust a mountain goat with your snacks.
The Legend of the Trio
"Are we seriously doing this based on a viral internet rumor?" Ajeng crossed her arms, staring up at the massive, fog-covered peak of Mount Arjuna.
Rido adjusted his backpack with a bright, overly confident smile. "Come on, Ajeng! Do not tell me you are actually scared of the 'Curse of the Trio.' It is literally just a silly myth to keep amateur hikers off the tricky trails."
Standing behind them, Bima nervously pushed his thick glasses up the bridge of his nose. He was carrying a massive, forty-pound backpack that contained three different first-aid kits, two compasses, and enough emergency rations to survive a zombie apocalypse.
"Technically, the internet says the mountain spirit gets angry if you hike in a group of three," Bima stammered, looking around the dark tree line. "Maybe we should just go back to the campus cafeteria. They have pizza today."
"No retreating!" Rido laughed, patting Bima firmly on the shoulder. "We are going to conquer Mount Arjuna, take an epic selfie at the summit, and prove everyone wrong. Let's go!"
With Rido leading the charge, the three college freshmen stepped through the wooden hiking gates. They entered the dense, beautiful pine forest, leaving the safety of the busy world completely behind them.
The Shadows of the Forest
The first few hours of the hike were absolutely spectacular. The air was crisp and cool, smelling beautifully of pine needles and damp earth. They joked around, took countless photos of the scenery, and completely forgot about the internet rumors.
However, as the sun began to dip behind the horizon, the atmosphere of Mount Arjuna changed drastically.
The air grew incredibly thin and freezing cold. A thick, milky-white fog rolled across the hiking path, swallowing the trees in a heavy, mysterious silence. The vibrant green forest suddenly felt like a massive, grey maze.
"Did anyone else just feel that?" Ajeng whispered, rubbing her arms. "I feel like someone is watching us from the trees."
"It is just your imagination," Rido said, though his voice was noticeably quieter than before. "Let's set up the tent here for the night. We will push for the summit tomorrow morning."
Footsteps in the Dark
They pitched their bright yellow tent on a small, flat clearing surrounded by towering pines. They managed to start a small, flickering campfire, completely huddled together for warmth. They ate their instant noodles in silence, every sudden snap of a twig making Bima jump in his seat.
Around midnight, long after the fire had died out, they were all zipped tightly into their sleeping bags.
Suddenly, a distinct sound broke the terrifying silence.
Crunch... Crunch... Crunch...
It was the heavy, deliberate sound of footsteps walking directly outside their thin nylon tent. Ajeng grabbed Rido’s arm in the pitch black. Bima stopped breathing completely, pulling his sleeping bag entirely over his head.
The footsteps circled the tent slowly. Then, they stopped directly in front of the zippered door.
"Who is out there?" Rido asked, his voice shaking violently. He tried to sound like a brave hero, but he sounded more like a terrified mouse.
There was absolutely no answer. Suddenly, they heard the terrifying sound of plastic ripping, followed by loud, aggressive chewing.
"The ghost is eating my emergency chocolate!" Bima shrieked, instantly abandoning his fear. He grabbed his heavy flashlight, unzipped the tent, and clicked the bright beam on.
Standing in the cold mist was not a terrifying phantom or a cursed spirit. It was a very fat, extremely fluffy wild mountain goat. The goat looked directly into the flashlight beam, chewing happily on Bima’s expensive imported chocolate bar, completely unbothered by the screaming teenagers.
The Figure on the Cliff
Rido and Ajeng burst into uncontrollable laughter. The intense, terrifying tension completely vanished, replaced by the hilarious realization that they had just been terrorized by a hungry farm animal.
The next morning, feeling much braver, they packed up their half-eaten supplies and pushed toward the summit.
When they finally broke through the tree line, the view was absolutely breathtaking. A pure ocean of white clouds rested below them, and the golden morning sun warmed their tired faces. They cheered loudly, giving each other massive high-fives. They had officially conquered Mount Arjuna.
As they sat near the edge of the cliff to rest, Bima suddenly gasped and pointed a shaking finger toward a distant ridge.
Standing perfectly still on the edge of the rocky drop-off was a tall, shadowy figure. It had long, wild hair blowing in the wind, and it was staring directly at them.
"Okay, that is definitely not a goat," Ajeng whispered, her eyes wide with panic.
Slowly, the creepy figure raised a long arm and began waving frantically at them.
"Run!" Rido yelled, completely abandoning his brave leader persona.
The three friends scrambled down the rocky path, slipping and sliding in pure panic. They did not stop running until they reached the safety of the lower forest, completely convinced they had just narrowly escaped the legendary curse of the mountain.
The Midnight Knock
A few days later, they were safely back in their college dorms in the city. The terrifying figure on the summit was still burned into their memories, but the safety of civilization made it feel like a distant dream.
It was a quiet Tuesday night. Rido was sitting at his desk, studying for a massive history exam. The room was completely silent.
Suddenly, a sharp knock echoed against his glass window.
Tapp... Tapp... Tapp...
Rido froze. His dorm room was on the second floor. There was absolutely no way anyone could be knocking on his window. His heart hammered furiously against his ribs as he remembered the creepy figure waving at them from the mountain peak.
"You broke the rule," a raspy, terrifying voice whispered from just outside the glass.
Rido backed away, grabbing a heavy textbook to defend himself. Slowly, the window slid open. A terrifying shadow crept into the room. Rido screamed, throwing the heavy textbook directly at the intruder.
"Owh! Hey, watch it!" a very familiar voice yelped.
The room lights flicked on. Standing in the middle of Rido’s room, rubbing his head, was Bima. Beside him, holding a broomstick and a portable Bluetooth speaker that had played the creepy voice, was Ajeng. They were both laughing so hard they had tears in their eyes.
The True Treasure of the Mountain
"Are you guys completely insane?!" Rido shouted, his heart still racing. "I almost gave you a concussion!"
"We had to get payback for you dragging us up that freezing mountain!" Ajeng laughed, tossing a small, crumpled envelope onto Rido's desk. "By the way, the campus mailroom just delivered this to you."
Rido opened the envelope with shaking hands. Inside was a Polaroid photograph. It was a picture of Rido, Bima, and Ajeng running away from the summit in absolute terror. Attached to the photo was a handwritten note on official National Park paper.
Dear Hikers,
I tried waving to let you know you dropped your camera lens cap, but you guys are really fast runners! I am the lead ecologist for Mount Arjuna. Thanks for visiting, and please tell your friend to stop feeding the wild goats chocolate.
- Dr. Hendra.
The three friends stared at the note in absolute silence for three seconds before bursting into a fit of hysterical laughter. They laughed until their stomachs hurt, collapsing onto the dorm room floor.
There was no curse. There were no ghosts. There was only a hungry goat, a friendly scientist, and their own wild imaginations.
